Narayana Hospital Ahmedabad Saves Ex-Military Veteran from Amputation after Severe Road Accident
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India] September 21: In a remarkable testament to the skill and dedication of doctors & critical care staff at Narayana Hospital, Ahmedabad, an ex-military veteran Mr. Birmar Ram Khot, who was on the verge of losing his leg after a devastating road accident, has not only survived but is on the road to recovery with his limb intact. The patient arrived at the hospital’s emergency following a traumatic road accident in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, which left him with a life-threatening crush injury.
The patient had spent the previous night being rushed to four different hospitals in Jodhpur, where he faced the grim reality of treatment denial or the daunting recommendation of leg amputation. His left leg had been severely mangled—most of the skin had been stripped away, the muscles torn, and bones fractured. By the time he reached Narayana Hospital, Ahmedabad, his condition was critical due to excessive blood loss and the extent of his injuries.
The medical team at Narayana Hospital, Ahmedabad led by Dr. Kinner Avashia, Consultant Orthopedics, Joint Replacement, and Trauma Surgeon, knew they were facing an uphill battle. The challenge wasn’t only about saving a limb; it was also about saving a life.
“The moment we saw the patient, we understood the seriousness of the situation. We were up against time, but we were determined to fight for his limb, especially given his background as an ex-military officer. The pressure was immense, but so was our commitment,” said Dr. Avashia.
Without wasting a minute, the patient was prepped for an emergency surgery. During the operation, the medical team worked tirelessly to clean the wound, stabilize the fractured bones, and reconstruct the severely damaged muscles. The first surgery was a success, giving the patient a fighting chance at both life and limb preservation.
He remained in the hospital for two weeks of intensive care, during which another surgery was performed to remove necrotic tissue. What followed was a delicate balance of medical expertise and emotional support for both the patient and his family. With his condition stabilized, the doctors provided continuous wound care while his family was counselled and reassured. His recovery, though slow, was steady.
On May 31, another milestone was reached when Dr. Avashia and his team performed successful skin grafting to fully cover the exposed areas of the leg. Following the graft’s healing and confirmation of the limb’s viability, a final surgery was conducted on June 22 to address the complex fractures. A rod and screws were carefully inserted to stabilize the bone.
Now, two months later, the patient is walking with the help of a walker, undergoing rehabilitation and physiotherapy. His progress is steady, a reflection of his resilience and the expert care provided by Narayana Hospital’s team.
“Cases like this are a reminder of why we do what we do,” reflected Dr. Avashia. “The road to recovery is long, but every small step is a victory. We are proud that Narayana Hospital, Ahmedabad is equipped with both the expertise and experience to handle such serious cases. Our goal is always to provide hope in the face of adversity, and we are delighted to see this patient’s journey toward healing.”
